Start by not trusting us
The right posture towards a site like this one is mild suspicion, and we would rather earn a reader's confidence slowly than ask for it in a headline. What follows is the information a suspicious reader would want.
How the site is funded
The site carries commercial placements. Where a button invites you to make contact through a form, that route is commercial, and it is the mechanism by which this publication pays for itself. Every such button on the site is a button, in the ordinary sense: it does not hide inside a sentence of editorial text, and there is at most one on any page.
Nothing else on a page is for sale. We do not sell a better verdict, a higher position, the removal of a report, or advance sight of one. There is no position to sell in any case, since the site publishes no ranking.
Where the conflict sits, plainly
Any publication funded this way has an incentive to be gentle, and pretending otherwise would be the first dishonest thing on the page. Three practices exist to hold that incentive at a distance.
The verdict of a report is written from the file, and the file is correspondence and register searches. A commercial arrangement is not an input to it, and no verdict on this site has ever been altered on the strength of one.
The default verdict is unverified, not favourable. Where a report finds nothing, it says it found nothing. An empty finding is worth less commercially than a warm one, and we print it anyway because the alternative is worthless to a reader.
The right of reply is free and unconditional. An operator does not have to buy anything to be answered, quoted or corrected on this site, and no operator has ever been offered such a trade.
What we ask you not to conclude
That a report exists does not mean we endorse the platform it covers. That a report is cautious does not mean the platform has done anything wrong. That a report calls a platform unverified means exactly what it says: we searched, and the record was not there to be found.
